Function First Black Belts – Invisible doors

We believe in life invisible doors open for those who act with passion and commitment. We believe that unless the organisation is corrupt this is an integral feature of the working world.

We are all surrounded by invisible doors, they open when least expected but there are factors at play that open them. People talk about you, people notice behaviours

These are the keys to the invisible doors

By rewarding hard work and certain behaviours we believe we are preparing people for the real world and sending a positive message to all involved, kids and adults.

Stress Levels In Training

Stress Levels In Training

Stress Levels In Training – A vital area to manage

Stress Levels In Training

Stress Levels In Training – An Overview

Stress has its uses in combat, unfortunately, stress has a bad rap these days.

Not enough stress can lead to underperformance in sport and in self-defence can lead to disaster.

Too much stress leads to a shut down of the senses and reflexes. So both ends of the scale are not helpful for combat.

As martial artists, we need to find the sweet spot and that lies around 140BPM heart rate.

Stress Levels In Training – Optimal training

Now if you were about to play Chopin on a piano you need a low heart rate. This is complex motor/muscle movements. You need to be very relaxed

If you were about to deadlift 200 KG you can be at the other end of the scale. This is a gross motor/muscle skill

As mentioned, we martial artists need to be in the middle for optimal performance.

Stress Levels In Training – Controlling emotion

There are a few tools you can use to help control heart rate. Here are 2.

  1. Meditation – This can help to not get caught up in the emotion. Meditation is an amazing tool to develop mental strength. You see your thoughts and you recognise you are not thinking them. You then develop the skill to not attach to them. Stress levels can go through the roof when confronted by an opponent or a threat. To focus and calm the mind with skills developed through meditation gives you a huge advantage
  2. Sparring – This is sort of obvious though there are a few schools of thought on this. We basically work like this. 100 training sessions are light technical sparring and 1 session is tough intense sparring. So we operate a 100/1 ratio in our sparring classes. This helps develop the skills needed to spar safely and build confidence. After that its simply more time on the mats sparring, keeping that ego in check. Not getting too stressed and overwhelmed.

Stress Levels In Training

We hope this was helpful, in the end there are no shortcuts. More time on the mats surrounded by the right people builds confidence. This helps with stress levels and this improves not only combat but in all of life when mastered.

Social Media Self Defence

It’s A Real Thing

Social Media Self Defence – Some tips to help

Social Media Self Defence

Social Media Self Defence – Twitter & Facebook are NOT REAL Life

We are in a strange time and place where humans are struggling to adapt to the current technological landscape.

BAD NEWS is, it’s going to get worse before it gets better.

GOOD NEWS is, you can train to keep the wolves and keyboard warriors at bay.

So have you ever commented on a post and before you know it, your being attacked and abused?

The simplest comment can be met with insults and anger. If you haven’t then can you please send me your secret.

Social Media Self Defence – The signs

The first signs are usually people respond with something personal. This is your warning sign, it’s all about the ideas. Let’s say we’re discussing a political idea or a training technique, it doesn’t really matter.

The thing we’re discussing is an idea, we are not our idea’s, ideas can change. As soon as someone criticises you and not your idea the conversation is going well off track.

Simply respond with “Can we leave me out of this, i’d like to stick with the subject and idea”

I have been in debates where people have gone completely insane and insulting. I keep repeating this until they get it and we continue or i leave the conversation.

Social Media Self Defence – Go ahead punk, change my mind

I always like to squeeze in the invitation, go ahead punk, change my mind. I mean it, if your idea is better than my own then I’m shifting my paradigm over, that’s what I live for. I’m not here to prove I’m right, so prove my idea wrong or weak.

Imagine a world where politicians acted like that. Instead of turning up to argue and prove a point. Turn up to get to the best outcome, so in the end, we all win. We can dream eh!

social media self defence

Social Media Self Defence – Insane rabbit head

It’s always helpful to remember that. If a man in a rabbit head mask shouted across the street. “you have absolutely no idea how to xxxxxxxxx” You wouldn’t automatically think “oh let’s sit down and discuss this, i need to explain my life to you”

No, you’d think, fruitcake stay out of my life in off for a coffee. Social media is the same, random strangers with random profile pics. Saying random things often for no reason than to antagonise others.

There possibly also 12 years old and have nothing better to do than bait people much much wiser.

Social Media Self Defence – Stay Free

Don’t get caught up in it. It’s not real and while in the moment it can feel like a rollercoaster of emotions. Its simply a keyboard and a screen, turn it off.

No one, and I mean no one will care or remember a few hours later.

He who controls emotions controls the fight

Don’t Steal From Your Children

Don’t Steal From Your Children

Your Too Helpful

Don’t steal from your children – You Tinkers

The moment your child can tie their own laces, make their own bed and pack their own equipment before training. This should now be their responsibility forever more. Doing it for them is robbing them of responsibility and essential skills for life.

Don't steal from your children

Don’t steal from your children – Start Young

You’ve no doubt heard someone repeat the following from someone, ive even heard this reported in the news. I mean the news report it as if a crime. That’s the sort of moral punch these actions carry

“It’s awful, they sacked her for work via a text message” or “She dumped him on Facebook, how terrible”

So the person sending these text messages and Facebook dear Johns learnt that behaviour from somewhere. I mean it must seem acceptable to them in some weird reality.

Don’t steal from your children – Seeing the lessons

I believe it boils down to responsibility and we start teaching that age 5 in our classes. Now here’s an example of how the above behaviour becomes acceptable.

James is 6 years old, he’s been at his martial arts club for a year now. He decides he wants to leave and try football. Nothing wrong with that. We all leave, I left my coach and he left his coach.

Now, when I left my coach I went to see him and I thanked him for his mentoring and passion. In fact, every single relationship I’ve ever been in when its time to move on I’ve made that dreaded visit and spoken face to face.

Don’t steal from your children – Take Responsibility

So James wants to leave after a year, so dad calls into the club to say he’s leaving. Now is dad going to tell James’s girlfriend they are splitting up? Or is dad going into work for James and telling them he’s got a new job.

Doubtful isn’t it, now I’m being silly but you get my point?

James aged 5 would be served well by parents if he were taught to speak to the people he’s in relationships with himself.

Don't steal from your children

Don’t steal from your children – Release good manners in the world

Its basically good manners, you’re releasing them into the world to figure so much out its mindboggling. If the basics are taught at an early age it makes things much smoother

You get out of this life what you put in, I’m not on about hippy nonsense here.

Like push ups, you do sloppy push ups in practice. You get sloppy push ups as a result

Relationships are the same. Give them little value and you get relationships with little value. Our human connections should be cherished and our friendships should be worked on, they take effort.

Beginners MMA classes at Function First Lincoln

Beginners MMA Classes – Position Before Submission

Our beginners MMA classes cover the fundamental positions in Ju Jitsu, MMA and the grappling arts. You won’t be alone, training with other beginners building confidence together.

You will work on basic positions, this is vital. Being able to flow through the positions without thinking is key.  Once you can do this then we can pressure test each position. Can you hold your partner in a position so they cannot escape?

Once you can hold them still, now you can look at submissions. Armbars, chokes, kimuras etc all become much easier once you can hold someone still.

Beginners MMA Classes – Cross Training

As MMA is a complex art to learn. We divide our classes up into striking and groundwork. The striking classes include 20% takedowns so we end up on the ground. This is where you study the fascinating ground game in our Ju-Jitsu classes.

MMA requires an understanding of all combat areas that you will learn in the beginner MMA classes. Striking is, of course, a huge part of MMA. Learning how to enter into the clinch range would be another. As would be stopping your opponent entering into the clinch range. Defending takedowns and initiating takedowns all on your own terms. This is all covered in the beginner MMA classes.

Beginner MMA Classes – Outcomes

We have students train for various reasons. The main reason being confidence and nothing, we believe builds confidence quite like a combat sport. Others train to get fit and a fun healthy activity. Others train because MMA being a complex game stimulates the mind. It really is a thinking person’s sport. Of course, some train to compete but this is something we don’t force or require.

If you are happy training a few hours a week to study the art in martial art then we are just as happy as you are.

We hope this puts your mind at rest, we understand it can be quite daunting taking up a combat sport

Confidence & Comfort Zones

Beginners boxing classes at Function First Lincoln

beginners boxing classes

Beginners Boxing Classes – We all start somewhere

So we all start somewhere and that first step can be a little daunting sometimes. That’s why at Function First Lincoln we have beginner boxing classes. We ease you in with other beginners so you all grow together.

We’re here to make you not break you. Boxing is a go-to martial art for lots of people. It’s also a gateway art that leads many to train in other arts. At Function First, we are a mixed martial arts academy so if you decide you have the choice to try other classes.

Beginners Boxing Classes – You are not alone

We have lots of beginners so you won’t be alone. Beginners boxing classes mean you train for one year in the basics. After this, you progress onto the next stage with others when ready. You will focus on the basic strikes and combinations. Footwork and movement is also a huge part to learn.

I always loved the analogy of the supercar. You can have a V12 6000cc engine but without wheels, it’s going nowhere. Boxing, you can punch a heavy bag and break it in half. If you can’t move your feet then you’re going to need your opponent to stand still.

Beginners Boxing Classes –  Punch combinations

In year one you will learn the most common punch combinations in combat sport for knockouts. These have been studied over tens of thousands of fights over many years.

We also have a simple number system to help you learn the combinations faster and retain the information longer.

Personally, I find it fascinating that something that seems so simple. Can be so complex seemingly without an end to learning.

Beginners Boxing Classes – Depth of knowledge

Think about this, you learn a Jab or a drag step. Now that jab is the same jab as Mayweather learnt. But it’s obviously not used the same. The jab simply goes out and returns in a straight line, it takes five minutes to grasp. Then it takes a lifetime of study to make it work. This is what makes martial arts absolutely fascinating. You never have it all, there is always a deeper understanding.

Mental Strength

Laser Beam Focus at Function First Lincoln

Laser Beam Focus

Focus and attention play a huge part in martial arts. When someone is moving around in front of you throwing kicks and punches it pays to be in the moment.

The mind is a tricky little thing though before you know it, there it goes. Thinking about PS4 or whats for tea.

Laser Beam Focus – New ways we have been working it with the kids

So in our kid’s classes, we have been working with some new simple techniques to improve focus. Into laser beam focus of course.

Thes can be used at home by the parent for two minutes at a time twice a week. We noticed almost instant results. Though saying that it is something that should be done with persistence. Over many years if you really want a warrior mindset

  1. Simply get a meditation bell (follow this link) Now sit down with your child, eyes closed. Ring the bell and when you can’t hear the bell any longer raise your hand. You can stop the bell ringing at different times. Or let it fade away naturally. This really does focus the mind and you can do it along with your child. Hey, you might feel the benefits too. Actually, let me rephrase that. You will definitely feel the benefits if you do this.
  2. Get a cushion, lay down and put it on your child’s belly. Instruct them to breathe in and move the cushion up, breath out and bring it down. Repeat, do this twice a week for two minutes at a time. Breathing techniques are at the heart of martial arts and meditation. Breathing helps you control your power, emotions and resistance to strikes. Join in with your kids, as with exercise 1 you will benefit from this enormously.

Laser Beam Focus – In a crazy distracted world

Just a few minutes a day can have a profound effect. In todays world the skill of controlling the mind, not being distracted. Well, I think we all know, Facebook, Twitter and on and on it goes.

Theis is not wishy-washy hippy nonsense. The studies are out, they have been confirmed by science and millions of people worldwide.

Look after your mind because the revolution is internal

Boxing Classes Lincoln – Official UWCB trainers

Boxing Classes Lincoln – Money Raised

So were in our 3rd year with the white collar events and what a pleasure it’s been.

The organisation is close to raising £10,000,000 Ten Million pounds for cancer research UK. Function First Lincoln has raised over £50k so far

Since starting with the UWCB we have added specific boxing classes Lincoln to our timetable. They are turning out to be a huge success

Boxing Classes Lincoln – Competing

We are building our boxing fight team slowly but surely. As with everything Function First, we are in no rush. We play the long game, and those who stick around win.

Boxing classes lincoln

Boxing Assessments

We recently had our first boxing classes Lincoln assessments. Where new members covered basic punches and covers for the first 3 months

Progress has been solid and we are really happy with the boxing crew, a great addition to the club

Boxing Classes Lincoln – More Classes added soon

As boxing classes Lincoln are filling up quickly. We will be adding a Saturday morning class soon so keep tuned to find out when.

We have lots of students crossing over into Self Defence to MMA to K1 and Grappling. Now, of course, the boxing.

It’s been an interesting experiment because of course there are things you can get away with in boxing. Like weaving, for example, boxing you can get down there at low risk. Do the same in MMA and you take a knee to the face.

So those who wish to purely box are coached a little different than those who cross train

Boxing Classes Lincoln – Cross Training

So with lots of members cross training. We are really having to pay attention to who is doing what and making sure we’re not coaching bad habits.

It’s a challenge, and we like those so all good here in the FF ranch

If you’re interested in trying our boxing classes. Give us a bell and have a free trial to see how you get on.

Were not a fighters club, meaning if you simply want to punch pads and sweat. That suits us as much as it does you. Of course, if you want to fight, then simply turn up, train hard.

Function First

MMA Lincoln where the revolution is internal

MMA Lincoln

In the late 1990’s I was cross training in kickboxing, traditional Jiu-Jitsu and Keysi Fighting method which on its own was a mixture of arts. I was introduced to something called Vale Tudo by my good friend Tony Davis who around that time was travelling far and wide to train with little-known fighters such Antônio Rogério Nogueira.

Since them what we now know as MMA has completely transformed and exploded into the mainstream with such epic theatrical productions such as the Connor McGregor vs Mayweather fight. This fight is reported to have generated around $400,000,000 that’s half a billion nearly which I hope you agree is insane.

MMA Lincoln Fight Team

At Function First MMA Lincoln we entered the arena in 2000 and had some fantastic fights. Stu Smith one of our coaches won his first amateur fight in Peterborough and the following few years we learnt some important lessons and gained some valuable experience.

mma lincoln

Stu after his first win

MMA Lincoln Journey

In our early days, we used to teach all the groundwork, takedown and striking in a one-hour class. But soon realised that regular students making it in two nights a week were struggling to pick up the work. So after some deliberation, we split classes into striking and grappling, MMA Lincoln.

It worked out better than we expected. Students that could only attend two nights a week could now train one hour in our striking class and one hour in our jiu MMA Lincoln class and the results spoke for themselves.

It also meant we had students who preferred the striking and those that enjoyed the grappling more. So we catered for those people also

MMA Lincoln Process

So within the first two years, our striking classes bred two K1 Titleholders and several solid fight team members. Starting at interclubs and working up to the bigger shows.

We are now building a solid fight team though it’s worth mentioning. We are not what I would call a fighters academy. Most of our students train for fun and fitness and the multiple benefits of martial arts. Both off the mats as on the mats.

Our fight team make up around 10% of our members. That seems a great balance at this point in time.

So hopefully be seeing you on those mats soon
